How Do All-on-X Dental Implants Work?
Dental implants are the best tooth replacement option available. Since they replace the roots of the missing teeth, they come with benefits that you can’t achieve from traditional dentures or bridges. The unique placement method allows for additional stability, jawbone preservation and long-lasting prosthetics. Once of the characteristics of all-on-X that makes it unique from implant dentures is that it only requires the placement of a number of dental implants, usually four, at strategic angles in the thickest areas of the jaw. This minimizes the patient’s need for bone grafting. After the dental implants have been placed, abutments are attached and used to secure your customized denture in place.
Am I a Candidate for All-on-X Dental Implants?
Most people who have lost all of their teeth in one or both arches are usually good candidates for all-on-X. Even if you have experienced tooth loss-related bone loss, you may still be a good candidate because of the strategic angle placement used for this procedure. A patient who would normally need bone grafting for implant dentures might not need it to get all-on-X. Just keep in mind that with any type of tooth replacement, it is crucial that you maintain excellent oral hygiene. This includes healthy lifestyle practices and avoiding bad habits, like smoking and chewing tobacco.
All-on-X vs. Traditional Dental Implants
All-on-X has a lot in common with implants dentures. Here are a few things that separate them from each other.
- Number of Dental Implants: Implants require up to eight dental implants for a stable smile, increasing their cost.
- Bone Grafting: To get implant dentures, a higher percentage of patients require bone grafting.
- Quicker: It takes many months to get implant dentures. All-on-X dental implants sometimes allow patients to show off their new smile on the same day.
Full Mouth Implants: What to Expect
Everyone’s smile needs are unique, so the process can vary from patient to patient. However, here are some steps everyone can expect!
- Consultation: Your first step is your initial consultation. During this time, we will examine your smile, and measurements are taken of your mouth so we can ensure that you are a good candidate and begin planning your treatment. We will also discuss the financial aspects of your treatment so that you don’t run into any surprises.
- Records: This appointment doesn’t involve any procedures. It involves taking photograms, digital scans of the teeth, and sometimes a CT scan. After this, the surgery date can be scheduled.
- Surgery Day: This is the day where your dental implants are placed. After numbing the area with a local anesthetic, dental implants are placed at strategic locations and angles along the jawbone to allow for the best support.
